In a fire at a wedding in the Al-Hamdaniya area in the Iraqi city of Nineveh, the death toll and injuries exceeded 450 people. The Iraqi Red Crescent announced this on its account on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

Previously, the Ministry of Health reported that as a result of the incident died at least 100 people, another 150 injured. Nineveh Deputy Governor Hassan al-Allaq later told Reuters that 113 people were killed in the incident. Nineveh Governor Najm al-Juburi declared a week of mourning for the victims of the fire.

The press service of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani reported that the head of government has already contacted the governor of Nineveh to find out about the consequences of the fire. The authorities are making every effort to provide assistance to the victims. To this end, Al-Sudani instructed the ministers of interior and health to mobilize all efforts to provide assistance.

The Iraqi news agency INA later reported that the Interior Ministry issued an arrest warrant for the four owners of the premises where the celebration was held. According to preliminary data, the fire started due to a violation of safety rules, the Ministry of Internal Affairs noted.

According to INA, the construction of the hall where the wedding event was held used flammable panels, which, as explained by the Office of Civil Defense, “destroy within minutes of a fire breaking out.” As a result, this led to the collapse of some parts of the hall.
