A new COVID-19 pandemic, similar to the one that occurred in the world in 2020-2022, could begin in 30 years. About this in the TASS commentary reported Head of the Department of Molecular Virology of the State Scientific Center “Vector” Valery Loktev on the sidelines of the Openbio forum.

“Most likely, new serious coronavirus pandemics will arise when this generation with immunity passes away. <...> That is, large pandemics followed over a fairly long period of several decades, but there is an aggravating circumstance here, because the first coronavirus outbreak [произошла в] 2003, a [следующая] – 2020. There are 17 years between them. But in 2003 there was no large-scale outbreak, so now, I think, we have been living quietly for 30 years,” he said.

According to him, now coronavirus infection has become a seasonal infection.

Over the past few weeks, the incidence of COVID-19 in Russia has been growing. In particular, for the week from September 18 to 24, the number of people infected with coronavirus in Russia increased by 14,435 people, or 25.3%.

On September 18, Rospotrebnadzor reported that the new variant of COVID-19 “pirola” is more contagious because it has a number of additional mutations. Rospotrebnadzor emphasized that Omicron vaccines are also effective for Pyrola. On September 19, the department reported that they do not yet plan to introduce a mask regime and other restrictions in Russia due to COVID-19, but allow local measures in institutions.
