UN: Execution of prisoner with nitrogen in US amounts to torture

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk commented on the execution of a prisoner with nitrogen gas in the United States.

Let us remind youThe first nitrogen execution in US history took place in Alabama. The convicted mastermind of a woman’s 1988 murder, Kenneth Eugene Smith, was executed in Atmore after a failed attempt using standard lethal injection.

“I deeply regret the execution of Kenneth Eugene Smith in Alabama, despite serious concerns that this new and untested method of nitrogen gas asphyxiation may amount to torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment,” Turk responded.

In addition, he called for a moratorium on the death penalty.
