European Council President Charles Michel has expressed the view that the European Union (EU) should increase its investment in defense in light of former US President Donald Trump’s statements about his reluctance to support NATO countries.
In his profile on the social network X, Michel emphasized that the transatlantic alliance has provided security and prosperity for Americans, Canadians and Europeans for 75 years.
He noted that Trump’s statements regarding the security of NATO and Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty serve only the interests of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The politician emphasized the need to develop the EU’s strategic autonomy in foreign policy and active investment in defense.
Previously Secretary General Stoltenberg promised a unified and powerful response to any NATO attack.
