The Russian Foreign Ministry explained why Russian sailors are being held in Mozambique

Russian sailors who are in the port of Maputo (Mozambique) have become hostages of a financial and property conflict, and now the Russian mission is making efforts to return them to their homeland, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported, according to RIA Novosti. The incident became known after a publication in the Shot Telegram channel that crew members, including Russians, have been on board the Cameroon-flagged fishing vessel Volopas for eight months without fuel or electricity.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, there are five people on the ship, two of whom, including the captain, are Russian citizens. After the captain expressed a desire to return to Russia, the embassy in Mozambique turned to local authorities for support. The department noted that steps are being taken to interact with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Migration Service and the Maputo port administration.

However, despite the efforts being made, the issue of returning the sailors to their homeland remains unresolved. The Foreign Ministry emphasized that the crew found themselves in a difficult situation due to a financial dispute between the ship-owning company and a local agent company. In addition, port authorities insist on the presence of a minimum number of crew members to support the vessel at the berth.
