Zakharova: Armenia’s exit from the CSTO does not relate to the country’s national interests

Armenia’s potential exit from CSTO should be based on the current interests of the country, and not on “flirting” with the West. Official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova stated this to RIA Novosti.

According to her, any state has the right to choose which organizations it plans to cooperate with. At the same time, the national interests and needs of the country must be taken into account, the diplomat noted.

Zakharova stressed that she does not understand why Armenian politicians impose on their citizens the opinion about the negative role of the CSTO.

“It seems to me that this does not relate to the true primordial and national interests of Armenia. I think and I’m sure I just have this information. This is something that was prepared somewhere in the Brussels area, this, you know, information stew that is now being abundantly tried to feed the citizens of Armenia, inventing some fables about the CSTO,” the politician commented on this topic.

In conclusion, she recalled that Armenia will have to decide on its own whether to leave or remain in the CSTO, while she called on Yerevan not to shift responsibility for this decision to other countries.

Earlier it was reported that the Armenian parliament stated that it had miscalculated the risks of filing an application to join the EU. More about this read the material Public News Service.
