Which calico bed linen is best?

Calico is a very popular material for sewing bed linen. The product is made of cotton fabric, pleasant to the touch and practical to use. Unlike other types of cotton, calico has a special weave that gives the bedding an even matte finish without shine or shimmer on both sides. But not every calico meets the buyer’s requirements. Public news service I found out which calico bedding is best to choose from.

Let’s consider several important criteria that will help you decide on the choice of calico bed linen.

Density

The most important criterion when choosing calico is its density. There are such varieties:

  • 90-120 g/m2.

This is an indicator of short-lived and loose bed linen, which shines through in the light, has a boring appearance, and shrinks after washing. The cheapest bed linen is made from such calico, which is rarely used. For example, you can buy it for guests or for a trip. To prevent it from becoming unusable ahead of schedule, it is better to wash it by hand.

But for a crib, calico with a density of 110 g/m2 (not lower) is quite suitable. And although such underwear wears out quickly, during its service it gives the child pleasant comfort due to its lightness and weightlessness.

  • 120-140 g/m2.

This is the optimal density indicator for calico linen. It is a pleasant, lightweight fabric, but at the same time quite resistant to abrasion and tearing. Such products are suitable for daily use by adults and teenagers.

  • 140-145 g/m2.

This is a very durable, reliable and wear-resistant material that is not afraid of washing. However, it is not a very pleasant fabric to the touch, so it is more often used not in domestic settings, but in commercial settings, for example, in hospitals or hotels.

Size

Bed linen of absolutely any size, including children’s, can be made from calico. To select the appropriate parameters, you need to consider the following recommendations:

  • for 1 person a 1.5-bedroom set is enough. It is better not to take a set that is too large, since you can get tangled in the blanket at night;
  • for two people the best option is 1.6×2.0 m;
  • if three people will be hiding, for example, mother, father and child, then it is better to take European standard underwear – its parameters are 1.8×2.0 m;
  • For those who prefer not to share their duvet with a partner, you should choose a family set with two 1.5 m wide duvet covers.

Design

Calico is a pleasant, delicate, refreshing fabric, but it cannot boast of a variety of designs. The simplest manufacturing technology involves obtaining a white or monochrome canvas. As the textile industry developed, they learned to dye calico in bright colors and decorate it with patterns, so currently there are two types of calico bed linen:

  • monochrome. Such textiles are painted in one color or two colors with a clear border;
  • printed. In this case, the pattern is applied at the fabric production stage. Therefore, it is impossible to create complex ornaments on calico, but it can please you with its cute, unobtrusive, discreet patterns.

The most striking and interesting designs of calico for bed linen can be found from Turkish and Russian manufacturers.

Natural calico or synthetic

Real calico has good breathability and hypoallergenicity, and it is also soft, pleasant, and warm, while calico using artificial fibers can be smoother, harder, rougher, and unpleasant.

To be fair, it should be noted that the use of synthetic fibers further enhances the strength of fabric with a natural cotton base, but for some consumers, a 100 percent cotton composition is fundamentally important. Sleeping on such bedding is much more pleasant. You can distinguish natural calico from synthetics as follows:

  • on both sides, natural calico fabric has the same texture, and it also quickly adapts to the body temperature of a sleeping person, and also retains warm air well, while chemical fibers always remain cool;
  • The fabric is created by weaving threads crosswise. Real cotton fiber is highly hygroscopic, so it instantly absorbs moisture from the surface. If you drop water on the linen, splashes will remain on the artificial fabric;
  • The surface of natural fabric is not static. As for artificial calico, it becomes highly electrified when exposed to it. If you rub the two ends together, you can feel static tension;
  • Natural calico does not wrinkle much, but it does not remain perfectly flat after creasing. In comparison, artificial material looks more neat and smooth, it straightens out almost immediately after creasing and returns to its previous shape without leaving wrinkles;
  • natural calico is much heavier than polymer thread. You can easily feel the difference in weight.

Thus, natural calico compared to artificial calico creates more comfortable conditions for sleep, which affects the mood and well-being of the sleeper. Therefore, when buying bed linen, it is important to give preference to natural cotton.
