When and how to plant watermelon seedlings in 2024

Nowadays, watermelons and melons growing in a summer cottage no longer surprise anyone. Summer residents have adapted to growing this crop even in harsh regions. Perhaps a watermelon grown in your own garden will not be as sugary as a purchased one, but there is no doubt about its quality, benefits and safety. The time for planting watermelons for seedlings has already begun. Public news service I found out when and how to sow watermelons for seedlings in 2024.

When to plant

Let’s figure out when different varieties of watermelons are planted in different climatic zones:

  • Ultra early.

Ultra-early varieties are famous for their resistance to frost and low temperatures, so they are often grown in Siberia, Bashkiria, the Leningrad region and the Far East. Sowing is done in early May, and transplantation is done in June.

  • Early.

Early watermelons also withstand low temperatures well, so they are allowed to be planted in central Russia, the Moscow region and Mordovia. In these regions, sowing begins in mid-May, and in the south – from mid-April.

  • Late.

Such varieties are cultivated only in the south and in the Black Earth Region. Watermelons here are not grown by seedlings, but the seeds are planted directly in open ground at the end of April.

The specific planting day can be selected in accordance with the Lunar calendar. In 2024, favorable days for sowing watermelons fall on the following dates:

  • March: 13, 14, 17 (from 12:52), 18, 19;
  • April: 9 (from 14:22), 10, 11 (until 15:53), 14, 15, 21, 22, 23;
  • May: 11, 12, 13 (until 13:28), 18, 19, 20, 21, 22.

Seed preparation

Watermelon seeds bought in a store cannot boast of good germination, so it is customary to germinate them. This is done as follows:

  1. Place a damp cloth at the bottom of the saucer.
  2. Place planting material on its surface.
  3. Sprinkle it with water.
  4. Cover the top with another napkin.

If the seeds are of high quality, then after three days they will begin to germinate, but make sure that the seeds are not in water, but simply remain in a humid environment. Seeds that do not hatch within a week can be thrown away.

Soil preparation

A universal soil mixture for seedlings from the store is suitable as a substrate, but it must be diluted with sand by 25%, since watermelons love sandy soil. If you want to prepare the substrate yourself, then mix garden soil, humus and sand in proportions 2:1:1.

Sowing

Melons do not tolerate picking well, so their seeds are immediately planted in separate containers. The sowing process looks like this:

  1. Fill the containers halfway with soil. This is necessary so that it is possible to add soil as the crop grows.
  2. Moisten the substrate well.
  3. Make holes about 5 cm deep with a stick in each cup.
  4. Place 2-3 seeds in each hole.
  5. Sprinkle the substrate on top.
  6. Compact the soil carefully.
  7. Water the planting site.
  8. Cover containers with cling film or glass.
  9. Place in a warm place where the temperature is maintained at +23…+25 degrees.

Care

To grow healthy and strong seedlings, follow the following care rules:

  • Lighting.

Prepare additional light sources to provide full daylight. In spring, the day may still be short for watermelons, so LED, fluorescent lighting or phytolamps will be needed. The optimal daylight hours for seedlings are 12–14 hours.

With a lack of light, the seedlings will begin to stretch. When the bushes stretch more than 10 cm, they can be thrown away, since such seedlings will grow into a weak, fragile plant that is unlikely to produce a good harvest.

  • Watering.

For irrigation, it is important to use only water that has stood for 24 hours. Watering is carried out as the top layer of soil dries. Hatched seedlings are moistened often, but in a small volume. Grown plants are watered less frequently, but the amount of water for irrigation is increased. You need to water at the root, avoiding water getting on the leaves.

  • Feeding.

The first fertilizer is applied at the stage of appearance of two true leaves. Potassium fertilizers are suitable as a starting additional nutrition.

The second fertilizer is applied a week before transplanting the seedlings into the ground. This time, a solution of wood ash will do. You can prepare it as follows:

  1. Pour 200 g of ash into 3 liters of boiling water.
  2. Insist for 24 hours.
  3. Dilute 200 ml of infusion with 1.8 liters of water.

Transfer

Plants are transplanted at the age of 20-30 days, by which time they should already have 3-4 true leaves. Seedlings can be planted both in a greenhouse and in open ground. Planting in greenhouse conditions can be done earlier – at the end of April or beginning of May. The heat-loving crop is planted in open ground only after May 25th.

According to the 2024 Lunar Calendar, it is recommended to plant seedlings in a greenhouse on April 29 or May 10, and in open ground on May 27, as well as June 9-10. When transplanting seedlings to a permanent place, follow the following rules:

  • replant watermelon seedlings together with a lump of earth;
  • When planting in open ground, between two seedlings there should be 0.5 m, and between rows – 1.5-2 m;
  • When planted in a greenhouse, seedlings are placed at a distance of 70 cm between rows and 50 cm in a row.
