The State Department announced the Russian Federation’s refusal of the US proposal to exchange Gershkovich and Whelan

The head of the press service of the US State Department, Matthew Miller, announced on Tuesday, December 5, that the Russian Federation had refused, in his words, a profitable offer from the American side to exchange Paul Whelan, convicted in Russia, and the arrested Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich. Both are citizens of the United States. TASS reports this.

Miller clarified that the offer was “substantial.” He was introduced to the Russian side in recent weeks.

“Russia rejected this proposal,” the publication quotes the American diplomat.

He added that Washington intends to continue working to bring Gershkovich and Whelan home. This is one of the priorities of Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US President Joe Biden.

Earlier it was reported that an incident occurred at the Office of the Federal Penitentiary Service (UFSIN) in the Republic of Mordovia with American Paul Whelan, convicted of espionage.
