The Ministry of Defense scrambled a Su-27 fighter due to a US drone approaching the state border

An aerial target was detected over the Black Sea approaching the Russian border, the Russian military scrambled a Su-27 fighter, which identified the object as a US Air Force RQ-4B Global Howk reconnaissance drone. About it reported press service of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

An object approaching the state border was discovered on October 15 by Russian airspace control equipment.

“To identify an air target and prevent violation of the State Border of the Russian Federation, a Su-27 fighter from the air defense duty forces was scrambled. The crew of the Russian fighter identified the aerial target as a reconnaissance UAV RQ-4B Global Howk of the US Air Force,” the defense department said in a statement.

After the Russian fighter approached the drone, it made a turn away from the Russian border, and the plane returned safely to its home airfield, the Ministry of Defense added. As a result, the military did not allow violation of the state border of the Russian Federation.

The department emphasized that the Su-27 flight was carried out in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace over neutral waters in compliance with safety measures.

The UAVs were collecting data in the Crimea region. Commenting on this event, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Moscow does not intend to ignore the role of Western intelligence agencies providing intelligence information to Ukraine.
