The EU Court of Justice annulled sanctions against the Belarusian tire manufacturer Belshina

The European Court of General Jurisdiction decided to withdraw sanctions from the Belarusian manufacturer of automobile tires OJSC Belshina.

The company was included in the sanctions list EU in December 2021 due to human rights violations. The EU explained the decision on sanctions by the fact that Belshina is a large state-owned manufacturer and a source of income for the “regime” Lukashenko”

“The Belarusian state receives direct profit from the income received [компанией]. Hence, [компания] supports Lukashenko’s regime,” the EU considered.

However, on March 2, 2022, Belshina appealed to the EU Court to lift the restrictions, arguing that the company was unprofitable before being included in the sanctions list.

Based on the results of the consideration of the case, the court concluded that the EU Council could not convincingly prove that Belshina is indeed a key source of income for the Lukashenko regime and that the Belarusian state directly benefits from the company’s income.

The court also excluded Belshina from the list of EU sanctions imposed due to military actions in Ukrainewhich the company also disputed.

Earlier, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, criticized the decision of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) to terminate cooperation with Russia, calling it politicized and unacceptable.
