Storm warning announced in Sochi


Heavy rains with thunderstorms and winds of 20-25 m/s are expected in Sochi on the night of October 9, reported at the main directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in the Krasnodar Territory.

“A complex of hydrometeorological phenomena is expected in the city of Sochi: heavy rains, downpours with thunderstorms, hail, squally winds of 20-25 m/s,” the message says.

The agency recommended staying at home, monitoring the condition of the heating and lighting systems, and in the event of a power outage or gas supply, it is necessary to turn off all gas and electrical appliances, as well as use waterproof clothing and shoes, and place the most valuable things in a moisture-proof fabric.

In the event of a tornado making landfall, the Ministry of Emergency Situations advises to beware of broken electrical wires, tall buildings and trees, to strengthen temporary housing (tent, hut, canopy), and also not to approach windows, etc.

From July 7 to July 10, heavy rains and downpours, combined with thunderstorms, hail and gusty winds of up to 23 m/s, occurred in the Krasnodar Territory. On July 8, Anapa authorities introduced a ban on swimming in the sea due to a storm and bottom currents. Today, July 9, the city hall announced the extension of the ban on swimming in the Black Sea. Beaches in Sochi were also closed.

Then, in the Khostinsky district of the resort, due to heavy rains, about ten cars were carried away by the flow of water. Two houses were also flooded. There were no casualties as a result of the flooding, but three people were reported missing.
