Solheim Cup: United States dominates the morning, Europe dominates the afternoon

The start of the 18th edition of the Solheim Cup saw some inspired Americans start the traditional tournament overwhelmingly at the Finca Cortesín in Malaga, Spain. In the morning session, Stacy Lewis ‘ girls took a 4-0 lead, in the afternoon Europe recovered and put the score 5-3 in favor of the visitors.

From the first hole the stars and stripes dictated the actions at the dawn of the Spanish day, scoring points there in three of the four matches. Allisen Corpuz and Nelly Korda defeated Anna Nordqvist and Leona Maguire in the most attractive face-to-face match of the first session, however, the spotlight was monopolized by the pair formed by Ally Ewing and Cheyenne Knight, who resolved the matter in 13 holes.

As the afternoon fell, logic began to prevail, the favorites and locals righted the course and gave the fans of the Old Continent reasons to celebrate. Maguire and Georgia Hall put the first European point on the board beating major champions Lexi Thompson and Lilia Vu. It should be remembered that in the second session on Friday and Saturday, the four golfers play their ball, and the lowest score is counted for each hole; The first function is an alternating ball.

As with the Ryder Cup, the Solheim usually represents too many nerves for the participants. Europe knew how to overcome them and the opposing score with great shots. Suzanne Pettersen‘s team made three hole-outs, including Emily Pedersen‘s hole-in-one on the 12th, just the second in tournament history.

The Ryder Cup is just around the corner

The Ryder Cup will be played at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy, between Friday, September 29, and Sunday, October 1. The United States won the previous edition but has not triumphed in foreign territory since 1993. Recently, Rory McIlroy said that Europe’s best option to win is to rely on its long game.
