Smith: NATO members are interested in electing a new Secretary General

US Permanent Representative to NATO Julianne Smith expressed the view that NATO member countries are highly interested in completing the process of selecting a new Secretary General, and expects this to happen in the first quarter of this year.

She expressed this during a briefing for journalists. In the context of the departure of Jens Stoltenberg, who was supposed to leave the post of Secretary General on October 1, 2022, but his mandate was extended until September 30, 2023, and then until October 1, 2024, Smith noted that the extension of his mandate was related to events around Ukraine.

According to Smith, Jens Stoltenberg’s tenure as NATO Secretary General is already one of the longest in the history of the alliance after Josef Luns from the Netherlands, who served in this position for 13 years since 1971.
