On September 29, Rosatom integrator company in the field of electricity storage systems Renera LLC (part of the Rosatom Fuel Company “TVEL“) and Mosgortrans entered into the first contract in Russia for the supply of traction batteries for electric vehicles, which provides for investment obligations to create production of these products.

As part of the contract, State Unitary Enterprise Mosgortrans is guaranteed to purchase more than 155,000 traction batteries produced by Rosatom for electric vehicles. In its turn, “Rosatom» undertakes obligations to create a production of energy storage devices in Moscow and deliver the products produced there in accordance with the contracted volume.

The start of construction of the new plant was given by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and First Deputy General Director of Rosatom Alexander Lokshin. The future production will be located in the Krasnaya Pakhra settlement on the territory of the Troitsky administrative district of Moscow.

The capacity of the new Rosatom enterprise will be 4 GWh per year (total capacity of manufactured devices). The “Gigafactory” will be located on a site with an area of 20.4 hectares and will be equipped with modern technological equipment that provides a full cycle of battery production – from the lithium-ion cell to the subsequent assembly of traction batteries and stationary electricity storage systems.

Technologies used in design and production will ensure high performance properties of traction batteries. The production automation level will be 90%. Most technological processes will be carried out on robotic lines with a total length of 2.5 km. The enterprise will provide new jobs for 870 people. The production site will comply with all environmental standards.

Moscow’s need for modern electric transport is steadily growing every year. The capital’s carrier Mosgortrans plans to completely switch to Russian electric buses, and the Moskvich automobile plant will in the coming years begin producing electric vehicles from basic Russian components on its own universal platform. According to the contract, Rosatom will supply traction batteries for more than 5,000 electric buses in Moscow. This is Europe’s largest contract for the supply of traction batteries for urban electric vehicles. In addition, it is planned to equip 150,000 Moskvich electric vehicles with modern batteries from the new production. The contract also includes the development of electric batteries for river transport, tram cars and personal mobility equipment.

“”Rosatom“took on the task of forming complete production chains in Russia in two closely related sectors – lithium products and electric transport. In the first case, this is the full life cycle of lithium products from the extraction of raw materials to the production of high-tech batteries and their disposal. “The second is what is necessary for electric propulsion: nuclear industry enterprises are capable of producing about 60% of all electric vehicle components, including batteries, electric motors, magnets made of rare earth alloys, microelement base, polymer and composite materials,” Lokshin noted.
