Psychologist Bulgakova: “Zoomers” lead a healthier lifestyle than older generations

Representatives of the “zoomer” generation (those born from 1997 to 2012) are increasingly leading the lifestyle of “pensioners”—they go to bed early and drink little alcohol.

People aged 18 to 35 say they have noticed a direct link between sleep and overall health, which is why they feel it is important to get as much sleep as possible. Some people go to bed as early as 9 pm.

For the Zoomer generation, sleep is so important that young people are unable to perform various tasks before bed. For example, 68% of 2,000 respondents fall asleep with their phone in their hand. And 47% fell asleep without taking off their everyday clothes.

And a recent study by scientists found that members of Generation Z are also drinking less than previous generations. According to experts, why this generation reduced alcohol consumption is unclear – many factors could influence this decision. One of them is the realization that alcohol causes depression, and that quitting it goes hand in hand with improved sleep, weight loss and increased energy.

Associate Professor of the Department of Occupational Psychology and Psychological Counseling, Faculty of Psychology, State University of Education Ekaterina Bulgakova told in an interview Public News Servicethat this trend is characteristic not only of American, but also of Russian “zoomers”.

“Alcohol is indeed one of the factors that causes depression”

“Alcohol is indeed one of the factors that causes depression. The generation from 18 to 35 years old is “sharpened” on work and active activity. Life in a metropolis, travel time there and back, stress – all this exhausts young people. And they choose sleep and sports. As for the phone in hand, this is a general trend. Constant absorption of information, the need to constantly “be in touch” overloads the nervous system,” says the expert.

Also, the publication’s interlocutor notes, now health and sports are more accessible, and young people understand that prevention is cheaper than treatment.

“By the way, the desire for a healthy lifestyle can also take pathological forms: in particular, there is the so-called phenomenon of orthorexia – fixation on healthy food”

“There is a downside to this phenomenon. Young people prefer not to start relationships because it also “takes energy.” In their opinion, it is better to go to the gym or engage in meditative practices than to enter into a relationship. By the way, the desire for a healthy lifestyle can also take pathological forms: in particular, there is the so-called phenomenon of orthorexia – fixation on healthy food.”

Previously sleep specialist Pavel Kudinov called Drink herbal extracts rather than alcohol for good sleep. Sleeping pills, he says, will make the problem of falling asleep even worse in the future.
