Politician Puigdemont, who fled Spain, wants to take part in the elections in Catalonia

Former Catalan Prime Minister Carles Puigdemont, who left Spain in 2017 following an illegal referendum on the region’s independence, has announced his intention to stand as a candidate in the upcoming parliamentary elections in Catalonia.

Puigdemont, who heads the separatist party Together for Catalonia, said that Spanish the state used repressive measures to punish the Catalan people, and therefore he decided to put forward his candidacy for the upcoming elections to the regional parliament, which are scheduled in Catalonia on May 12.

In Spain, there is an arrest warrant against Puigdemont on charges of organizing a referendum on the independence of Catalonia. The Spanish Parliament is currently considering a bill to grant amnesty to persons associated with the separatist process.

The politician, also a member of the European Parliament, led the regional government during the independence referendum, after which he fled to Belgium. Subsequently, the Spanish judicial authorities repeatedly tried to achieve his extradition.
