PCMag: Hackers set a new record in 2023, earning more than $1 billion

Ransomware hackers earned more than $1 billion last year, a record high. This information is shared by PCMag with reference to data from Chainalysis.

“The ransomware industry has seen a significant increase in the frequency, scale and volume of attacks in 2023,” the company said in its research.

In addition, cybercriminals have begun demanding higher ransoms from victims.

“75% of total ransomware payment volume in 2023 will be payments of $1 million or more,” added Chainalysis head of threat intelligence Jackie Burns Koven.

Cybercriminals have hacked smart devices around the world and used their power to launch a cyberattack on the website of an unnamed Swiss company.
