Former Yugoslav Foreign Minister: It’s time for Serbia to demand damages from NATO

Serbia it’s time to demand from the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) to compensate for the damage caused by the alliance’s bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999. Zhivadin Yovanovic, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, stated this to RIA Novosti.

According to him, the government of which he was a member estimated the damage from NATO bombing at one hundred billion dollars. Yovanovic also noted that the leadership of the alliance promised the West that the bombing would “end Yugoslavia” and “bring Slobodan Milosevic to his knees.”

“One hundred billion dollars is the direct damage that was calculated by the government of which I was a member. <…> NATO is aware of the responsibility, not only for material damage, but also for the poisoning of nature and the entry of depleted uranium into the food chain. I am sure that the time is coming when we will raise the issue of compensation for damage,” the ex-minister said.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the bombing of Yugoslavia 25 years ago a huge tragedy. Read more about this in material Public News Service.
