Finland opened five cases of organizing border crossings from the Russian Federation

The Finnish coast guard, which operates along the eastern border with Russia, has launched five investigations into suspicions of organizing the illegal movement of people, the Finnish agency STT reported, citing border guards.

According to the material, the Coast Guard of the Gulf of Finland began an investigation under the article “illegal migration under aggravating circumstances.” The head of the crime prevention department, Antti Raassi, noted that the investigations are related to the organization of border crossings between Finland and Russia for hundreds of people. Attempts were also made to smuggle them from Finland to other countries, he added.

Finland, faced with an uncontrolled flow of refugees from third countries, has extended the closure of its border with Russia until February 11. Periodic restrictions on border crossings have been introduced since November 2023. The authorities have decided to close all land border crossings with Russia from November 30 to December 13. After briefly opening two border crossings on December 14, the government has again decided to completely close the border until January 14.
