Today, the likelihood of Russian citizen Igor Churkin being extradited to Ukraine is extremely low. This was stated by Christian Rubilar, the lawyer of Churkin, who was detained in Argentina.
“A request for political asylum paralyzes extradition until there is a firm decision (on asylum),” the lawyer said, emphasizing that sometimes the consideration of an asylum request can take several years.
The lawyer also noted that Churkin submitted a request for Argentine citizenship because his daughter was born in Argentina and local laws give him “the right to trial in Argentina.”
We would like to remind you that a Russian citizen was previously detained in Argentina at the request of Ukraine, and a trial is currently pending regarding the possibility of his extradition to Kyiv. Read more about this in material Public News Service.
