A virtual ophthalmologist has been developed in the Russian Federation

Programmers at the Don State Technical University have created a program based on artificial intelligence (AI) that can detect various eye diseases. The program analyzes images created by a device used by ophthalmologists and shares a possible diagnosis. About it writes newspaper “Izvestia”.

Currently, AI can detect defects such as myopia, glaucoma, cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

The author of the project, Mikhail Shurduk, said the following: “The algorithm works as follows: the doctor uploads an image taken by a fundus camera into Windows applications. Then artificial intelligence analyzes it within two to three seconds, after which the program issues a preliminary diagnosis.”

Earlier, doctor Irina Leshchenko warned about the risk of retinal detachment due to myopia. According to her, if myopia progresses, the human eye stretches, which, in turn, is fraught with the progression of myopia, and its treatment does not always lead to the restoration of vision.
