24-year-old marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum dies in road accident

Kenyan marathon runner and world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, 24, has died in a car accident. It is reported that the athlete was in the car with coach Gervase Hakizimana when the accident occurred.

According to Nation Africa, Kiptum lost control and the car collided with a tree. Both passengers died on the spot. In addition to them, there was another girl in the car who was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga expressed regret over the death of the young athlete. In a social media post, he described Kelvin Kiptum as a Kenyan sports icon.

“Our country mourns the profound loss of a true hero,” Odinga said.
