The Federal Security Service (FSB) wants to oblige organizers of the dissemination of information to store and provide information about the geolocation of users and their means of payment. Relevant draft government resolution published on the portal of draft legal acts.
The project developers point out that currently the information to be stored and transferred to the FSB does not directly include information about the geolocation of users and the means of payments they make. However, in fact, this information is already stored and processed in information systems and databases of Internet companies. The fact that their transfer to the FSB is not fixed at the regulatory level “creates ambiguous law enforcement practice, reduces the effectiveness of operational intelligence activities, and negatively affects the security of the Russian Federation.”
July 1st in Russia entered in force of the anti-terrorist “Yarovaya Law,” according to which telecom operators and Internet companies are required to store text messages, voice information, images, sounds, and videos of users for up to six months. At the beginning of 2023, the government commission on legislative activities approved a bill developed by the Ministry of Digital Development on turnover fines for telecom operators for refusing to install a system of operational investigative measures (SORM). Equipment for SORM allows you to store users’ Internet traffic, text messages and recordings of telephone conversations. Operators are required to install it according to the Yarovaya Law
